Intimate landscapes.

Not every photograph needs a horizon. Some of the best scenes in a wood are the size of a dinner plate, a frosted leaf, a seed head, a single lit branch in dark water, and most people walk straight past them.

Twisting

An intimate landscape is what you find when you stop looking for the view. No sky, no sense of scale, no obvious subject. Just a small arrangement of leaves or frost or water that holds together if you frame it carefully, and falls apart if you do not.

These are the photographs that taught me to slow down. You cannot make them quickly. They reward the walk where nothing obvious presents itself and you have to look harder, crouch lower, wait for the wind to drop. The wood does not hand them to you. You earn them by paying attention.

None of this needs travelling for. Every image here was made in ordinary woodland close to home, often on days when the wider scene was not working and I turned my attention to what was at my feet instead. That turning out to be the better picture, more often than not, is most of what this gallery is about.

Where were these photographs taken?

In ordinary woodland close to home, across Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties. Intimate landscapes are the one kind of photograph you never have to travel for. They are at your feet, wherever you are, if you slow down enough to see them.

Do you need special equipment for this kind of photography?

Less than people expect. A close-focusing lens helps, but the real requirement is attention, the willingness to stop, look down, and work a small scene rather than chase the big one. Most of these images were made with my standard lens. I cover this in my workshops and editing sessions.

Can I buy a print?

Yes. Most images here are available as limited edition fine art prints, produced on the highest quality archival papers in sizes suited to both homes and larger interiors. Prints are arranged directly with me, so get in touch and tell me which image and roughly what size you have in mind.

Do you run workshops in these woods?

I do. I teach one-to-one woodland photography workshops and online editing sessions across Hertfordshire and the surrounding ancient woodlands, shaped around your level and pace.
