Fading Limes

These photographs were made across the ancient woodlands of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex and the Chilterns. Not the famous forests, the local ones. The fragments most people drive past without entering.

Ancient woodland covers less than three percent of the British Isles. What remains survives in pieces, on hillsides, in river valleys, along old boundaries, scattered but connected by deep time. These are the woods I return to, in every season and most weathers, often when there is no obvious reason to go.

The pictures here come from that returning. Quiet scenes, made over years rather than collected on good days. If one of them holds your attention, that is the whole point.

Where were these photographs taken?

Across the ancient woodlands of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex and the Chilterns. I work close to home, returning to local woods through the seasons rather than travelling to dramatic locations. You can read more about why these overlooked fragments matter in my piece on ancient woodland.
