Temperate rainforest.
Britain has rainforest. Not many people know it, and most who do have never stood in one. These are the wet woods of the western hills, where rain falls often enough that moss grows on everything that holds still.
Temperate rainforest is rarer than tropical. It survives in the wettest corners of the British Isles, the steep oak woods of the west, where the air stays damp and the light comes green and low. Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Welsh valleys, parts of the Peak District, the Lake District and the western Highlands. Fragments, mostly, in places too awkward to clear.
These are not woods you pass on the way to somewhere. You go to them deliberately, and you accept that you will get wet. The rain is not an inconvenience here. It is the whole reason the place exists, and the days it falls hardest are the days the moss glows and the streams run full.
I photograph them the way I photograph everywhere: slowly, in the conditions most people wait out. The difference is that here the conditions never really stop, which is exactly the point.

What is temperate rainforest, and where is it found in the UK?
A rare habitat, rarer than tropical rainforest, found in the wettest western parts of Britain: Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Welsh valleys, the Lake District, the western Highlands, and a few sheltered gorges beyond the classic zone. Where were these photographs taken?
Across several of Britain's rainforest fragments, in steep oak woods and river gorges where the rain rarely stops. These are travelled-to woods rather than local ones, visited deliberately and usually in the wet.
Can I buy a print?
Yes. Most images here are available as limited edition fine art prints, produced on the highest quality archival papers in sizes suited to both homes and larger interiors. Prints are arranged directly with me, so get in touch and tell me which image and roughly what size you have in mind.
Do you run workshops in these woods?
I do. I teach one-to-one woodland photography workshops and online editing sessions across Hertfordshire and the surrounding ancient woodlands, shaped around your level and pace.
