From above.
Woodland looks different from above. The canopy closes the view from the ground, but from the air the wood lays itself out: the patterns of how trees grow together, and the season written across the whole stand at once.
The wood keeps its structure hidden at eye level. You walk under it, between trunks, and the shape of the whole thing stays out of reach. From above it resolves. You see how the species sort themselves, where one stand gives way to another, how a single tree holds its own circle of space among the rest.
It is the season that reads most clearly from up here. On the ground autumn arrives leaf by leaf and you notice it slowly. From above it arrives all at once, the canopy turning in patches, gold against the green that has not gone yet, then the bare structure of winter, then the close even green of summer when every crown is full.
These were made over several years of the same local woods, returning through the turning year. Not far-flung forest. The ordinary canopy of the home counties, seen from the one angle the ground never gives you.

How were these aerial photographs made?
From a drone, flown low and slow over the canopy. Aerial work over woodland needs the right permissions and conditions, so these were made within the rules, in calm weather, over woods I know well from the ground first. Knowing a place on foot is what tells you where it is worth being above it.
Where were these photographs taken?
Across my local woodlands in Hertfordshire. I work close to home, returning to local woods through the seasons rather than travelling for the bigger view.
Can I buy a print?
Yes. Most images here are available as limited edition fine art prints, produced on the highest quality archival papers in sizes suited to both homes and larger interiors. Prints are arranged directly with me, so get in touch and tell me which image and roughly what size you have in mind.
Do you run workshops in these woods?
I do. I teach one-to-one woodland photography workshops and online editing sessions across Hertfordshire and the surrounding ancient woodlands, shaped around your level and pace.
